Yoga Therapy for Sciatica

Sciatica is not an illness. Rather, it is a symptom of a medical disorder such as a herniated disc, spinal stenosis, or Piriformis syndrome. Sciatica will show up as pain, weakness, numbness, or other discomfort along the sciatic nerve including low back pain. It can occur without warning and last for long periods of time.

Yoga Therapy

There are one dozen yoga poses that specifically bring relief to sciatic pain. Chief amont them is Supta Padangusthasana & variations also known as reclined big toe pose or supine strap stretches.

How to Practice

Lying on the back, tuck chin in to lengthen neck. Bend the left knee and align left ankle under knee (option for absolute beginners). Otherwise, extend left leg and raise right leg towards the chest. Flex both feet. Keep both sitting bones on the ground. Place strap around the ball of the raised foot. Inhale to lengthen the right leg. Hold strap with both hands and on exhale slowly, gently draw right leg forward listening to the body’s boundaries. Hold this side for up to 10 deep breaths. Practice the pose on the left side.

Variations

As shown in the photo you may also take the leg to the right or left side holding for the same number of breaths. For added support, rest the leg on a block. Listen to your body and move gently and slowly.

Benefits

The pose increases blood circulation to gluteal area reducing pain. It also relieves lower back pain and sciatica symptoms. Private Yoga Therapy
