Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Florida Yoga Institute (FYI)?
FYI is a vibrant and beautiful yoga studio located in southwest Florida between Naples and Fort Myers. Founded in 2006, the Institute pioneered the state of Florida’s Classical Yoga Teacher Training.
Are there pre-requisites to apply to the FYI training?
Yes. In general we look for a serious/devoted student of yoga who has been studying and practicing yoga for at least one continuous year. More experience is welcome as it readies the candidate for training success.
What is unique about FYI’s training?
Every yoga teacher training draws and relies on the unique talents and experience of its leaders and the robustness of the curriculum. This training is unique in that the curriculum far surpasses all Yoga Alliance requirements. Our core professional staff has more than 50 combined years of yoga teaching experience and each is an Expert Registered Yoga Teacher with strong individual experience in many respected systems of yoga. Our YTT trains participants in the new mind-body sciences; a systematic study of classical meditation history, philosophy, and practice. The founder’s 15-year experience in marketing communications uniquely positions her to offer Yoga’s most comprehensive business mastery training. We are honored to have noted Florida Gulf Coast University professor Dr. Roberto Lopez as our Mind-Body Sciences instructor.
What is Classical Yoga?
Classical Yoga is also known as Ashtanga’s eight limbed path; and is also known as Raja Yoga, and was termed Kriya yoga. Classical Yoga incorporates the eight approaches (or eight limbs) of Patanjali, yoga’s first scholar. It involves primarily deep meditative awareness while incorporating in its exploration the practice of yoga asanas or postures, pranayama or the stretching of breath patterns. This classical orientation grounds us in a direct experience of reality and experience where we see things as they rare rather than through a veil of illusion and delusion.*
*Inspired by Richard Freeman, The Yoga Matrix.
What to expect from the Classical Yoga method?
Qualified and rigorously trained instructors committed to excellence in teaching. A safe and systematic progression of yoga postures to develop each student’s ability and skill, both within each class and from class to class. Sequencing that develops strength, flexibility, stamina, concentration, and body alignment. Each trainee receives individual attention, adjustments, adaptation of postures for individual needs; and precise use of language. Demonstration and teaching that develops understanding and intelligent action. Yoga and meditation philosophy is integrated within each yoga class. Understanding how to incorporate practice into daily life.
What is a typical day in the YTT?
The day begins at 8 am and ends at 8 pm. There are two yoga practices a day. The morning practice also incorporates meditation philosophy, instruction, and practice. There are 3-4 additional daily modules covering New Yoga Intelligence, Mind Body Sciences, Meditation Studies, Business Mastery, and Wisdom Training. There are three meal breaks during the day.
What is the Yoga Alliance (YA)?
The YA registers individual yoga teachers and yoga teacher training programs that comply with educational standards established by them. It also maintains a national yoga teachers' registry to promote teachers with training that meets its standards. Registered teachers are authorized to use the initials "RYT® (Registered Yoga Teacher) after their name or the initials "E-RYT® (Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher). To learn more visit http://www.yogaalliance.org.
What is the difference between a certification and registration?
A certification (certificate) is awarded by the yoga teacher training school. Upon graduation/certification, trainees can become registered by the YA. Please see our Yoga Certification Requirements page for more information.
Will I be able to teach anywhere upon graduation?
You will be able to teach at all yoga studios, gyms, wellness centers, and communities who seek a classically trained yoga instructor. Some health clubs/gyms may only require a weekend certification.
What is the tuition for the YTT?
The Tuition for 2011 is $2950.
Does FYI offer payment plans?
Yes. Students may sign up well in advance of the training, and take 6+ months to pay for it. All course fees must be paid 30 days before the training.
