Should We Make Our Pain Go Away?

The Buddha had a one track mind. He suffered greatly and after enlightenment chose to devote the next 50 years to teaching others about the nature of suffering and its antidote. Once he was enlightened he realized that even though we don’t want to suffer, we do the very thing that causes us to suffer.

The word suffering evokes a lot of melodrama, however, in the Pali language, the language of the Buddha, a less melodramatic version of the word is dukkha and is translated as a state of dissatisfaction, unease, or stress.

Yoga Therapy for Sciatica

Sciatica is not an illness. Rather, it is a symptom of a medical disorder such as a herniated disc, spinal stenosis, or Piriformis syndrome. Sciatica will show up as pain, weakness, numbness, or other discomfort along the sciatic nerve including low back pain. It can occur without warning and last for long periods of time.

Is Golf A Form of Meditation?

Florida - It’s the golf capital of the world and it’s no surprise that many of our yoga students are also avid golfers. At times I hear our golfer-yoga students say “Golf is like meditation.” Not one to turn down a research opportunity I began to think about this statement to learn whether it could be true. Meditation is described in yogic texts as a four point process: (1) withdrawal of the senses; (2) concentration; (3) meditation; and (4) bliss, enlightenment or awakening.

The Yoga of Compassion

Some years ago I went to a yoga center and heard a mother tell her daughter "You are dirty." The mom said this as she wiped her daughter's dress which the little girl, perhaps four years old, had gotten dirty.

I often hear our students at the say : "I am fat, I have a bad back, a bad knee, a bad hip - instead of stating the health condition as back pain, knee pain, or hip arthritis.
